Delete Your Data

This page explains how to delete your data from ChapterUp, the gamified reading app made by Sideways Lab. You can delete everything ChapterUp holds about you, whether or not you created an account, or remove specific data and keep the rest.

Deleting is permanent and cannot be undone by anyone, including us. The app offers to export your reading data first. Where we hold your data on our servers, deleting needs an internet connection: without one, nothing is deleted and the app asks you to try again.

How to delete your entire account

If you created a ChapterUp account:

1. Open ChapterUp on your device.
2. Go to your profile and open Settings.
3. Tap Delete Account.
4. Confirm when prompted.

This removes your data from our servers and clears the app's data stored on your device.

How to delete your data without an account

If you use ChapterUp without having created an account, you delete your data in the same place, under a different name:

1. Open ChapterUp on your device.
2. Go to your profile and open Settings.
3. Tap Delete My Data.
4. Confirm when prompted.

This removes any data we hold about you from our servers and clears the app's data stored on your device.

If you signed out of an account on this device, Delete My Data erases this device only. To delete that account, sign in to it and use Delete Account.

Deleting does not cancel a subscription

Deleting your data does not cancel a ChapterUp+ subscription. The store you subscribed through keeps billing you until you cancel it there. You can delete whether or not you cancel.

• Google Play: open the Play Store app, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Choose ChapterUp+ and tap Cancel subscription.
• App Store: open your device's Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Choose ChapterUp+ and tap Cancel Subscription.

How to delete some of your data

You can delete individual items at any time, in the app, and keep everything else:

• Remove a book from your library.
• Delete a review, reading note, or highlight.
• Delete a bookshelf.
• Leave a book club or remove a friend.

If you can't use the app

If you have an account but cannot sign in, email [email protected] from the email address on your account and ask us to delete your data. We may ask you to verify your identity before we action the request.

If you never created an account and no longer have the app, you cannot be identified: nothing you could tell us links you to your data. That means nobody, including us, can delete it on your behalf.

What we delete and what we keep

When you delete, we remove the following from our servers:

• your profile (email if you gave one, username, display name, and date of birth);
• your reading activity (books, sessions, streaks, XP, and achievements);
• content you created (reviews, notes, book-club posts, recommendations, and bookshelves);
• your social connections (friends and book-club memberships).

If you host a book club, deleting ends it for its members. They keep their own books and reading sessions.

Some data may be kept for a limited time after deletion:

• Your purchase records are kept for up to 7 years for tax and accounting, without your identity on them.
• Encrypted backups held by our hosting provider are overwritten on a rolling basis, no later than 30 days after deletion.
